In
1995 the Songhees Chief and Council signed our Property Taxation
and Property Assessment Bylaws, enacting tax jurisdiction over
our reserve lands and taking an important step towards self determination.
The
role of the Songhees Taxation Department is to Administer our
Taxation Bylaws and our Bylaw Enforcement Program.
We
collect property taxes from approximately 670 commercial properties
located on Songhees Reserves.
Pursuant
to our Property Taxation Bylaw, spending is governed by an Annual
Expenditure Bylaw.
Tax
Revenue is used to pay for the SERVICES
we provide to the residents on commercial properties, such as fire
protection, water & sewer infrastructure, road maintenance and
bylaw enforcement. We set aside 10% of taxes each year for future
capital infrastructure needs.
Our
Annual Expenditure Bylaws also include funding for SPECIAL
PROJECTS, to benefit all Songhees Residents, such as the QESEQ
TOTEM POLE
